Windows 2000 Accessories

This lab explores some of the various system customizing options in Windows 2000. The Power Options are useful if the system is on a laptop. These features can be used to turn off the monitor and hard disks to conserve energy and battery life. Accessibility Options can be used to help people with audio and visual impairments, making sounds at various keyboard events and showing visual alerts. Regional Options can change language and various country-specific settings on the computer. You can change the default sounds for different events.

Procedure

In this next section, you will look at various configuration options. These options are in the Windows 2000 Control Panel, and enable you to modify the behavior of the computer. You will be able to modify, for instance, your Power Options and energy saving features.

  1. Power Options

    1. Boot to the Windows 2000 desktop.

    2. Choose Start, Settings, Control Panel.

    3. Double-click on Power Options. You will see a window similar to Figure 3.8.

    5. Record your Turn Off Monitor and Turn Off Hard Disks settings in Table 3.14.

    7. Change the Turn Off Monitor setting to After 1 Min and click Apply.

    8. Do not move the mouse or press any keys for one minute and record your observations in Table 3.15.

    10. Move the mouse and change the Turn Off Monitor setting back to its original state.

    11. Click OK for the Power Options properties.

  2. Accessibility Options

    1. From the Windows 2000 Control Panel double-click on Accessibility Options.

    2. Click the Display tab. You will see a window similar to Figure 3.9.

    4. Select Use High Contrast. Click Apply.

    5. Record your observations in Table 3.16.

    7. Uncheck High Contrast and click Apply to restore the display to its original state. You might need to resize the taskbar by dragging the edge down to its original position.

    8. In Accessibility Options click the Mouse tab.

    9. Select Use MouseKeys. Click Apply.

    10. Look at the keyboard and verify that the Num Lock light is on. If it is not, press the Num Lock key.

    11. There are arrow keys on the numeric keypad on the right-hand side of the keyboard. Up is 8, down is 2, left is 4, and right is 6. Press up and record your observations in Table 3.17.

    13. Uncheck Use Mouse Keys and click Apply to restore the option back to its original state.

    14. Click OK to close Accessibility Options window.

  3. Regional Options

    1. From the Windows 2000 Control Panel double-click on Regional Options. You will see a window similar to Figure 3.10.

    3. On the General tab record your locale in Table 3.18.

    5. On the Numbers tab record the Digit Grouping in Table 3.18.

    6. On the Currency tab record the currency symbol in Table 3.18.

    7. On the Time tab record the Time Format in Table 3.18.

    8. On the Date tab record the Date Separator in Table 3.18.

    9. Under the Input Locales record the uppermost Input Language in Table 3.18.

    10. Click OK to close the Regional Options window.

  4. Sounds and Multimedia

    1. From the Windows 2000 Control Panel, double-click on Sounds and Multimedia. You will see a window similar to Figure 3.11.

    2. Click the Asterisk event.

    3. Record the Name in Table 3.19. This is the name of the sound file that Windows plays when the corresponding event has occurred.

    4. If you have a sound card and speakers, click the play button and you will hear the sound.

    5. Click the Audio tab. Record the preferred device for sound playback in Table 3.20.

    7. Click the Advanced tab under sound playback.

    8. Record the speaker setup in Table 3.21.

    10. Click OK to close the Advanced window.

    11. Click the Hardware tab.

    12. Record the number of devices listed in Table 3.22.

    14. Browse for the CD-ROM in the device listing and double-click on it.

    15. Record the name of the window that appears in Table 3.23.

    17. Click OK to close the window that you just opened.

    18. Click OK to close the Sound and Multimedia Properties.

    19. Close the Control Panel.

    20. Shut down the computer.

Contests and Drawings

Occasionally, we may sponsor a contest or drawing. Participation is optional. We communicate with users on a regular basis to provide requested services and in regard to issues relating to their account we reply via email or phone in accordance with the users' wishes when a user submits their information through our Contact Us form.

Other Collection and Use of Information


Application and System Logs

Pearson automatically collects log data to help ensure the delivery, availability and security of this site. Log data may include technical information about how a user or visitor connected to this site, such as browser type, type of computer/device, operating system, internet service provider and IP address. We use this information for support purposes and to monitor the health of the site, identify problems, improve service, detect unauthorized access and fraudulent activity, prevent and respond to security incidents and appropriately scale computing resources.

Web Analytics

Pearson may use third party web trend analytical services, including Google Analytics, to collect visitor information, such as IP addresses, browser types, referring pages, pages visited and time spent on a particular site. While these analytical services collect and report information on an anonymous basis, they may use cookies to gather web trend information. The information gathered may enable Pearson (but not the third party web trend services) to link information with application and system log data. Pearson uses this information for system administration and to identify problems, improve service, detect unauthorized access and fraudulent activity, prevent and respond to security incidents, appropriately scale computing resources and otherwise support and deliver this site and its services.

Cookies and Related Technologies

This site uses cookies and similar technologies to personalize content, measure traffic patterns, control security, track use and access of information on this site, and provide interest-based messages and advertising. Users can manage and block the use of cookies through their browser. Disabling or blocking certain cookies may limit the functionality of this site.

Do Not Track

This site currently does not respond to Do Not Track signals.

Security


Pearson uses appropriate physical, administrative and technical security measures to protect personal information from unauthorized access, use and disclosure.

Children


This site is not directed to children under the age of 13.

Marketing

Correcting/Updating Personal Information

If a user no longer desires our service and desires to delete his or her account, please contact us at customer-service@informit.com and we will process the deletion of a user's account.
