Preparation Hints
In some ways, Exam 70-169 is one of Microsoft’s easier certification exams. Unlike most of the other server exams, Exam 70-169 does not require deep technical knowledge. Instead, Microsoft uses this exam to test basic familiarity with Small Business Server 2011.
Having said that, it is important to not underestimate the exam. Even though Microsoft does not expect you to have deep technical knowledge for this exam, they do expect you to know the basics in a number of different areas. Some of the major areas that you will be tested on include:
- WSUS/patch management
Exchange Server
SharePoint Server
The Active Directory
Basic User, Computer, and Printer Management
Monitoring and Reporting
Disaster Recovery
As you can see, these are some rather large topic areas. To put this more in perspective, consider that entire books have been written on Exchange Server and that there are two Microsoft certification exams dedicated to Exchange Server. As such, the key to passing this exam is to understand what areas you will be tested on, and focus your studies on those areas.
On this particular exam, Microsoft expects you to know how to set up Exchange Server and how to do some basic maintenance. For example, you will need to know how to manage the Exchange Server databases, set mailbox quotas, and how to perform database defragmentation (among other things). The full list of objectives for this exam are outlined later in this exam profile.
