All last week in Orlando, FL, the Microsoft technical world gathered at their annual learning and technology shindig known as Tech-Ed. Don Field, Senior Director of Microsoft Certification Programs blogged from the show to present the broad outlines of the company's two new MCSE credentials for the upcoming new server version, officially known as "Windows Server 2012."

To begin with there are two new MCSEs involved, both aimed at infrastructure topics, one for desktop the other for server itself. Here's more:

  • MCSE: Desktop Infrastructure
This credential aims at issues related to management and deployment of desktops and devices (including mobile ones) to help users obtain what Don calls "flexible, consistent, and reliable access to corporate services." Thus, it's all about getting people and information or services together "from anywhere, on any device, while maintaining secuirty and compliance." Topics covered include desktop virtualization, remote deskp service, and application virtualization, so you might say here's another big virt cert!
  • MCSE: Server Infrastructure
This credential zeroes in on how to design, build, manage, operate and troubleshoot what Don calls "a highly efficient data center." This one's got a big list of major topics, including identity management, systems management, virtualization, storage, networking, and more. So while it does have virtual components and coverage, Don also points out that this credential seeks "to go beyond virtualization and deliver the essential services."

Each of these credentials requires earning the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 (a three exam cert) plus two more exams over and above those requirements. Those with an MCSA: Windows Server 2008, MCITP: Virtualization Administrator, MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator, MCITP: Lync Server Administrator, MCITP: SharePoint Administrator, or MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator can upgrade to the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 by taking a single exam (70-417: Upgrading Your Skills to MCSA Windows Server 2012) to get started on this process -- at least, as soon as that exam becomes publicly available.

Sounds very interesting. Some of the exam elements are still not yet publicly available, but then, neither is the final version of Windows Server 2012. Keep dropping in on the cert pages, and you'll see when exams go into beta, and more!
